In Utah, you can find placer gold, usually associated with volcanic rocks, within the Colorado River drainage system, including, for instance, the Dolores River (near Moab), Green River (in northeastern Utah), Abajo Mountain creekbeds (southeastern Utah) and the San Juan River (southeastern Utah). You may find that American Fork Canyon, which lies north of Provo and northeast of Utah Lake, will prove more rewarding than some other areas. Near the canyon’s mouth, you might find a small nugget and some “flour” gold.

Utah Placer Gold Locations

Placer gold was first reported in Utah in 1858. Large amounts of placer gold have been recovered from places like Bingham Canyon and the Abajo mountains.

The Abajo Mountains, also called the Blue Mountains, is a small mountain range west of Monticello, Utah, south of Canyonlands National Park and north of Blanding, Utah. The mountain range is located within the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The highest peak within the range is Abajo Peak at 11,360 feet (3,463 m).

This mountain range, like both the La Sal Range and Henry Mountains in the same part of the Colorado Plateau, is formed about igneous intrusions that are relatively resistant to erosion. Some of these intrusions form laccoliths emplaced at depths of a few kilometers.

A laccolith is a sheet intrusion (or concordant pluton) that has been injected between two layers of sedimentary rock. The pressure of the magma is high enough that the overlying strata are forced upward, giving the laccolith a dome or mushroom-like form with a generally planar base.

Much of Utah was formed as a result of volcanic activity. Some of the volcanos, cindercones or stratovolcanos, are known for explosive releases.
