Anyone following the national news is already aware that independent medical marijuana dispensary operators in 14 other states are generating substantial revenues and often handsome profits. When Arizona legalized medical marijuana (November 2010), industry observers concluded that a similar opportunity would present itself in Arizona. Due to Arizona’s strict limit on dispensary licenses (part of the enacted law), medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona will likely be the highest grossing and most profitable units in the entire country. In fact, an average dispensary in Arizona may earn as much as 7X that of an average dispensary earns in neighboring Colorado. To help better understand the underlying reasoning, the following chart presents sales data for established dispensaries in neighboring states California and Colorado:
