I don't really think it's the selling that did it. I think it's more a lack of a bid than anything else. Hedge funds are notorious for pulling away from the bid to keep prices low so they can load up at cheap rates. Then they kick it into overdrive and squash the shorts and watch the margin calls and stop losses take it sky high.
