serf, I'm guessing that by "house name" she is talking about shares in the in the broker/dealer's nominee name, rather than in the name of Cede & Co and held by DTC, fbo the broker/dealers.

You are correct, essentially the same thing.

The "Mario shares", most likely are held by DTC as they would have been delivered before they were know to be bogus.
