After having watched the new True Grit, I have to say that I much preferred the John Wayne version of True Grit. Not to take away from the new version, but comparing Jeff Bridges to John Wayne is a stretch. It's hard to top the original in most movies...for me anyway. I hold Clint Eastwood's movies in the same high regard. They'll never be able to reproduce them IMO
