Since Willard is so secretive about his life/his religion, it's an interesting glimpse into what shaped Willard/his beliefs...it's curious but not at all surprising that Willard, unlike many of his classmates at the time, "does not recall" leading a group of classmates to cut the hair of a school mate Willard and his friends suspected of being gay. Willard probably can remember what he had for breakfast at prep school, but "does not recall" an event that would perhaps scar someone until the day he died. Also interesting is Willard, ever the Mormon taught to convert others, wanted to meet his non-believer school chum's grandmother to talk religion - my bet is Willard "does not recall" that either.
