New York Times article on March 21 2012 entitled "How far would you go for a comeback" shows average worker first 6 months make $45k. That would be about $90k per year if they did'nt get a raise. Not bad money at all I would say... Also talks about the problem with housing. People sleeping in cars, illegally parking RVS. Sorry cant link the article.
