Chipguy, from previous posts you overestimated introduction frequencies for Merced, Mckinley, Madison, Montecito, and now probably Montvale too.

1) I never predicted Merced's frequency.
2) The introductory frequencies of Montecito/Montvale
have not been finalized let alone latter SKUs
3) I have also overestimated the frequency of 90 nm
dualie and single core Opterons as well as other
non-Intel processors.

Such is life that clock speed is now determined more
often by power dissipation and parametrics rather
than device performance and critical path timing which
makes prediction a much more tricky business.

So why trust Tukwila?

Huh? I don't believe I have said anything about the
frequency or performance of Tukwila, either based on
rumours, my own estimation, or insider information.

And where is the Itanium buzz this IDF?

Huh? Why don't we let IDF start and the keynote talks
be given before we start drawing conclusions about
what was emphasized and what wasn't. Keep in mind
that Intel is losing market share in x86 servers and
is rapidly gaining share with IPF in the high end
market. Which future products do you think Intel will
want to emphasize most strongly in the press?

Why did HP discontinue Itanium workstations a while back?

Because the general purpose workstation is now for all
intents and purposes a high end PC with a specialized
graphics card.

Why didn't you ask why SGI introduced an IPF workstation?

Why are engineers recently reportedly taken off Itanium development in favor of x86 development?

I have already said why - platform convergence. The best
people Intel has for this are the ex-ADTers who designed
the EV7 and EV8. They used to be entirely on the IPF side.
If both halves of the common platform are going to work
together what better way to help that happen than to move
some of the ex-ADT platform team to the Xeon MPU team(s)
that will use the new platform. This hardly seems like
rocket science.

The funny thing is had the engineers gone the other way
some of the IPF bashers on this thread would have painted
it as Intel bailing out the dumb IPF people.

So what exactly is it that makes you think all is about right on target and getting better with Itanium?

Because IPF momentum continues to strongly grow even
with Madison generation I2 processors in their final days.
All the important OSes/features are on board, ISVs are on
board (there are now over 5000 ISV apps for IPF just under
HP-UX alone). The new Fujitsu system is very impressive
and Fujitsu seems very serious about selling a shipload
of them. All this with the introduction of Montecito just a
few months away along with top to bottom chipset/system
revamps of HP and SGI IPF products to match the new chip.
What's not to like?
