Just 40 miles south, in Val d’Or, Agnico-Eagle sp ent $2 billion dollars and three years to develop its Goldex mine. It expected Goldex to produce 184,000 ounces of gold this year until—until a rock fault and flooding caused the company to close the mine temporarily to plan a new approach.
