mmoy - Possibly memory in general. If the larger DIMMs meant that there were more banks of memory to support, then you have an increased electrical load on the memory controller, which can require increased timings to ensure stability.

When possible, for performance's sake, it's best to use single-sided DIMMs(chips on only 1 side of the module), they'll load the system less, allowing tighter timings.

Also, particularly if you have no access to memory timing settings in BIOS, make sure your memory has the tightest SPD-set timings that your system will support.
