mmoy - I suspect it probably has increased the memory timings to ensure proper operation with the larger DIMM modules.
Do you know how the SPD settings compare between the two different module types? I don't suppose you have any BIOS access to memory timings, do you? Depending on chipset, there may be a utility that will allow you to tweak them, such as nVidia's nTune; I imagine that is likely more problematic with a laptop, though.
