But what IS good for the consumer these days? Is it really about the performance, or is it more about price? Is the free market really that inefficient when one company has 85-90% of the market? And if so, what's the alternative?

The alternative is not to allow predatory tactics that leverage the 85-90% market share in order to prevent access of a competitor to sell into the market place.

The concept is not hard to understand unless you are making a conscious effort not to understand. What makes it even easier to understand is that Intel is a textbook example of this behavior. Read info from JFTC for more.
