Well, if the other person didn't have the money but SPIN needed the case defended, then either SPIN had to pay it all themselves or alternately, they pay the other individuals part but then get paid back.

Like I said, I'm not 100% certain that this is even the case so it isn't really worth debating unless we know for sure.
