While Marcellus Shale development is still in very early stages, a partial development picture is
starting to emerge as the most promising areas for development are being identified. At the Penn
State Natural Gas Summit held in December, 2008, much of the discussion centered upon the so-
called Marcellus Shale “Fairway” that runs more-or-less through the center of Pennsylvania from
the southwestern corner to the northeastern corner and then into southeastern New York. The
fairway area represents the deepest and thus most highly pressurized areas of the Marcellus
Shale, and therefore these “hotspots” are the areas most promising to natural gas exploration.
