if i'm not mistaken, us is still #1 in the global economy/market. If this is the case, if the US drops off the planet, chaos ensues. So, i surmise that, although us might be in trouble with their debt, they are too big to fail :)

With that said, I don't think investing in metals are a bad idea, but i would much rather own the real thing than own a paper version IMO.
