An interesting piece of opinion:

"E-Trade has its own market maker, ETMM (some times ETRD), but they rarely represent your order, and often trade against you. We don’t like E-Trade for trading penny stocks because of this, and because their execution time is slow. The E-Trade platform does have some nice features but we think these are outweighed by the problem of market maker representation."
