Yes, stocks like this arn't in the DTCC, so that means their clearing house has to pay a lot extra to buy or sell these stocks, so they pass that on to you. All brokers but a few, Etrade etc, wont let you buy stocks that arnt in the dtcc to keep you from having to pay these fees. If you are already in one, then it usually costs $250 to hold it over night, and then another $250 to sell it...

This is not the broker charging you, this is coming from the clearing house...
