Regarding SOI: I seem to remember a lot of people indicating that AMD was going to "bury" intel with their early adoption of SOI, and that AMD would run rampant with high-frequency CPU's... while others disagreed and believed that AMD was trying a "hail mary" with SOI, and that the risks were substantial. I think it's clear who was right on that discussion...

Just maybe, the statement on the Intel web page a few? years ago about the P4 architecture being "the right way to go" could have been the outcome of many, many R&D $$ spent in the right place...
