I could have definitely sold some of my position for profits but didn't. I know this is what not to do but honestly, if I sold for profits and wanted to plop my money somewhere it would be here so I am holding until such a point as I wouldn't put my money here (if ever). Obviously, I will want some cash eventually to pay some debt but the longer I hold and the longer this runs, the more shares I get to keep invested.

Question -

Do capital gains occur only if you end the year with cash instead of owning shares or once a particular share is sold, is that when you pay the cap. gains? The reason I ask is, E-trade calculates my earnings weird, if I sell one stock and enter another, it like resets to zero.
