That's exactly what they purport to be doing and it doesn't seem as far-fetched as some would have us believe. If you can identify the bad guys, you're halfway there. Beyond that, does the "programmed" ion smother, punch, dissolve or block the nutrients of the bad guy? That part is proprietary and I hope it stays that way.
Check the databases of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Group, for example. There has been an enormous amount of fingerprinting of bad guys over the last ten+ years.
