But volatility and stocks are increasingly moving in the same direction, a sign to some that the market could be nearing a top. The VIX and equities have moved in unison in nearly one-third of trading sessions this year. During 2011, the VIX and the S&P 500 moved together in less than one-fifth of all trading sessions. The trend is “very bearish,” said Mark Sebastian, chief operating officer at OptionPit, an options education firm in Chicago.

“It’s like we’re in the eye of the hurricane right now. There’s no rain, everything seems calm and relaxed. We went through the front of the storm [late in 2011] and we’re waiting for it to begin again,” he said.
