ONEBGG, I totally agree that the press has no business inside a person's bedroom, even the president's bedroom. To me, that simply was not the question. To me what was important about the situation were the following things:
1. We had a chief executive who hit on female subordinates. Not only that, he had a history of using his position and other subordinates to facilitate his predatory sexual advances.
2. He lied under oath. Not once, but several times. Do you want a man who lies under oath to be chief executive of the company for which you work?
3. When caught, he blamed some vast rightwing conspiracy for his problems, rather than just admitting to it and getting over it. Slick Willie could have gotten out of it very simply, by saying something like,"Yeah, I did have an affair with Monica. So what? Which one of you would like to tell the world about your affair?" Now, what would the press and the republicans have been able to do with that? Certainly not impeach him.

The same approach would have worked for Trent Lott, as well. He could have said, "Look. I was trying to make a 100 year old senile man who happens to be a senator feel good on his birthday. I said something that some took as insensitive. For that I am sorry, but that is the end of it. No more questions on that subject." And then, he simply should not have said another word about it.

Now, I am sure that our resident liberals will say that what Trent Lott did was a whole lot worse than what Clinton did. It is a matter of perspective.

The truth usually works in situations like this, but it is a concept totally alien to most politicians' natures.
