I know that I mentioned this last year, but for those that have still not read it I very strongly recommend Michelle Goldberg's excellent 2006 book, Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism. She writes quite eloquently and persuasively about the inevitable rise in the power of the hyper-religious electorate.

Whether it's Romney or Santorum or some other ultra-religious nut channeling the whispered commands of their favorite deity into inflexible proclamations about America or Values or Family, IMHO it's all going to come down to religion. If not by this election, then by the next.
