LG Innotek (CEO: Young Ho, Hur) has commercialized a next-generation BLU that surpasses LED BLU (Back Light Unit), for the first time in the world.

LG Innotek announced its entry into a partnership agreement with a US nano tech player, Nanosys, for the commercialization of Quantum Dot on May 27, which should spur the mass-production of Quantum Dot BLU.

Quantum Dot, which is one of the most noted nano materials, surpasses AMOLED in terms of its color reproduction and offers excellent price competitiveness and size when combined with LED solutions; active efforts to commercialize the solution are in progress in various fields.

In the presence of Yun Yun-jung, the director of the Strategic Planning Team at LG Innotek and Jon Page, the CFO of Nanosys, along with other officials, both companies held a partnership agreement ceremony at Gonjiam Resort in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, and agreed to commercialize the Quantum Dot and expand the solution to a wide range of application areas.

According to the agreement, Nanosys will be the exclusive supplier of Quantum Dot tech, whereupon LG Innotek is supposed to manufacture Quantum Dot products based on the grafting of its world-best LED BlU tech into the solutions of Nanosys’ Quantum technology.

LG Innotek will slate to complete the construction of a Quantum Dot BLU production line and launch the full-fledged production of mini display devices such as cellular phones at the Gumi plant by September.

Last August, the company completed the development of a Quantum Dot BLU for mobile sets just four months after signing an MOU with Nanosys for Quantum Dot-related R&D cooperation, and submitted the product to the CES 2010, the world’s largest electric appliance exhibition, early this year.

The company has developed a Quantum Dot BLU model in which a pure white light has been implemented by combining blue LED and Quantum Dot solutions, thereby successfully improving the color reproduction (based on NTSC) of LEDs by 110% and introducing a solution that surpasses the performance of AMOLED.

The color reproduction of existing LED BLU solutions remains at 70%, while that of AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode), which has attracted the industry’s attention recently as a new display material, stands at 100%.

In its nature, LED emits only primary colors such as red, green, or blue, so it inevitably incurs color loss and is poor in terms of controlling light wavelengths, since any blue LED requires the coating of a fluorescent substance when implementing white light suitable for BLU or other lighting solutions.

The Quantum Dot material, however, is capable of implementing every natural color and features an instrument that enables the easy control of the wavelengths of light, which leads to outstanding color reproduction and brightness of light.

Furthermore, Quantum Dot offers greater price competitiveness and size expandability than AMOLED, and is accordingly expected to be rapidly adopted as a light source for medium and large-size display devices such as LCD TV sets in the near future.

“LG Innotek is the first company to have achieved the mass production of Quantum Dot products. We are looking forward to supplying an optimal light source for displays in terms of quality, performance and price,” declared an official at LG Innotek.

¦ Glossary

BLU (Back Light Unit): A component which emits some light at the rear of an LCD panel so that the picture captured on the LCD panel of a display unit – i.e., cellular phones, monitors, LCD TV sets, etc. – will be highly visible.

Quantum dot: A nano material of 10~15?, it produces shorter wavelengths of light as its particles get smaller, and vice versa. By using a mechanism designed to control the size of its particles, this material can generate virtually all types of light in the range of a visible ray.
