Tucson-based firm wins key body-armor certification

Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 1:05 pm

Tucson-based Bourque Industries said it has earned National Institute of Justice certification for its top-level body armor, a key step in marketing the product to military and law-enforcement customers.

The certification of Bourque’s Level III stand-alone Kryron Terminator Armor certifies that the product complies with the NIJ's most recent and rigorous standard for body armor.

Company founder and CEO John Bourque said the company is bringing new large-scale manufacturing processes online to meet expected demand for the newly-certified armor system.

In September, Bourque opened a 20,000-square-foot industrial space on the southeast side that it said could employ some 200 people once the company's armor is certified and production ramps up.

In NIJ testing at Oregon Ballistic Laboratories in October, Bourque's Level III armor plates stopped all six 7.62x51mm NATO rounds within standard deformation standards, the company said.

Bourque also has developed lighter-weight body armor and custom, lightweight vehicle armor products. The products use a patented aluminum alloy designed to withstand multiple shots and limits ricochet and shrapnel.
