National Health Investors, Inc. (NHI) is a real estate investment trust (REIT), which invests in income-producing healthcare properties in the long-term care and senior housing industries. As of December 31, 2010, NHI's portfolio consisted of real estate (excluding assets held for sale) and mortgage investments and other investments in preferred stock and marketable securities. As of December 31, 2010, the Company’s operations consisted of investments in real estate and mortgage notes receivable in 118 health care facilities located in 23 states consisting of 78 skilled nursing facilities (SNF), 31 assisted living facilities (ALF), two medical office buildings(MOBs), four independent living facilities (ILFs), one acute psychiatric hospital, one acute care hospital (ACH) and one transitional rehabilitation center (TRC). As of December 31, 2010, the Company leased 41 health care facilities to National HealthCare Corporation (NHC).
