There's all sorts of folks doing it over on the xtremesystems forum. Seems that with the X2's in particular, the IHS might not be making great contact with one or both cores, leading to significant improvements when it is removed. The trick seems to be to buying the right heatsink to go along with it-- many of them are "set" to expect the IHS height -- and applying it carefully, as it is much easier to crack the core without the IHS there.
