You can also look at it the following way.

Those who are IPO investing in an already established company like Google are going to make Google management very wealthy, very quickly. And they will pay accordingly through the price of their shares.

Those investing in technology that is not mature will also pay accordingly per share.....far less.

In the first, you have less risk and less potential benefit.

In the latter, higher risk and much greater potential benefit.

Its a matter of style and confidence in your own dd as to how you deal with the risk/benefit situation.
