Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. is a real estate investment trust (REIT) focused principally on cluster development through the ownership, operation, management, selective acquisition, development, and redevelopment of properties containing life science laboratory space. The Company is the provider of real estate, technical infrastructure, and services to diverse life science industry. Client tenants include institutional (universities and independent not-for-profit institutions), pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, product, service, and government agencies. As of December 31, 2010, the Company had 167 properties (163 properties located in 10 states in the United States and four properties located in Canada) containing approximately 13.7 million rentable square feet (including spaces undergoing active redevelopment and properties undergoing ground-up development of approximately 475,818 rentable square feet).
