In the early 80's I had a cartoon published in Weight Watchers Magazine called GIRTHA that ran for two years. It was then published in the Providence Journal under a different name, THOSE CRAZY PIRATES.
My partner & I took it to NY & KING FEATURES SYNDICATE. SYLVAN BYKE, head editor at King, kept it for 3 months & returned it. Shortly after, with minor changes from Dick Brown, a King cartoonist, it became - HAGAR THE HORRIBLE ($20M annually in those years).
Did we have any recourse? No, the Providence Journal would not support us against their bread & butter (KING) nor would any NY litigator. We even met other syndicate editors who agreed with us but would NOT testify in any potential suit.
Is life fair? Anyone can answer that question.
