France's SFR Strikes Pact With Sony BMG
By Aymeric Pichevin, Paris
Sony BMG has struck a content deal to supply 100,000 songs for download on French mobile operator SFR's third-generation cellular phone service. SFR struck a similar agreement with Universal Music just three weeks earlier.
The latest deal will bring to 500,000 the total number of titles available on SFR's 3G service, allegedly making it the biggest wireless music offering in the country. "This agreement will allow SFR to be the first French mobile operator to offer catalogs from the main majors to its 16 million customers," says SFR deputy director Jean-Marc Tassetto.
Through the Sony BMG deal -- which is exclusive until the end of August -- downloadable songs will be available both via mobile and PC at € 1.99 ($2.41) per title. Customers can buy bundles of 10 songs for €14.99 ($18.19).
SFR rolled out the first music download service in France in Nov. 2004 with 50,000 titles at launch. It has since adopted an aggressive strategy on music to support its 3G offer. The operator reported 150,000 3G subscribers as at the end of June; the company aim to reach 500,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
