The run up to $25 was due to a number of factors including a steady stream of technology announcements, some important upgrades, such as Merril Lynch, a very strong AMD presentation in November that confirmed the (false) expectation of 10% market share for Opteron servers, and better than seasonal CPU's (false again), and increasing profits in flash (false) and strong recurring rumours of a Dell converting to AMD processors (false). The short interest was much higher - I think it was in the high 50s- There was about 15 million worth of covering very quickly which added to the momentum.
