Sequential monthly increase in December exceeded expectation

Orders for Class 8 heavy trucks rose 46 percent in December from November, topping 30,000 units, according to preliminary data from one research firm.

ACT Research predicted net orders for December would total 30,100, slightly more than the preliminary estimate of 29,777 net orders from FTR Associates. In November, net orders totaled 20,603 units, a 27 percent decline from October, according to ACT Research.

Year-over-year, Class 8 net orders rose about 11 percent, FTR Associates said. “The rebound in orders to finish 2011 reaffirms our confidence that new truck demand will not wane in 2012,” said Jonathan Starks, director of transportation analysis.

ACT also expects strong truck demand in 2012. “Even if orders don’t continue to increase sequentially, we have enough of a backlog cushion that our outlook remains solid,” said Steve Tam, vice president of ACT’s commercial vehicle sector.
