Sometimes, depending on how your order is placed, the brokerage firm may be able to pick up only a small number of shs. It has happened to me with Schwab. Let's say I put an order in to Schwab for 500,000 shs at a set price. If Schwab can only obtain 800 shs - they will let the trade go thru. However, they would still try to get the remaining shs and charge commission for the whole lot.

If the order is for one day only - if Schwab cannot get the remaining shs - I would still be charged their minimum commission for the 800 shs.
