at one time, prior to the scrapping of our ballistic missile system, ND alone had the 5th biggest nuclear arsenal in the world. The missiles were stored in underground silos there and the thinking was that a first strike against us would be to take out the missiles, so North Dakotans were the front lines of being expendable.

There are still a couple air force bases there, in Grand Forks and Minot.

And in homage to red-stateness they preserved one of the silos and command center as the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site... LOL
