Albania's economy ministry will launch this month tender procedures for awarding concessions for the construction and operation of three hydropower plants in the country, ATA news agency informed. Vokopola 1 and 2 hydroelectric plants will be built on the cascade of the Vjosa River in central Albania, while the third project is related to the building of the Gavran power facility. All investor will be awarded a build, operate, transfer (BOT) contracts. Albania's power generating sector is highly dependable on water resources with some 98% of the total energy produced by hydropower plants. The output of privately-held small hydropower plants in Albania increased by 10% y/y to 96.7mn KWh in the first half of 2011, but still accounted for only 4% of the country's energy generation.
