The Save the Santa Ritas Assoc (SSSR) was formed in 1996 long before Augusta even existed! We built home on our lot because of the view!

It's fine to mine in areas of Arizona that will not cause destruction of people's water, air, recreational facilities, ranchers and views.

The pit is expected to be a mile wide and 800 feet deep and will destroy 3,300 acres of public land.

Towns that will be affected are:

Amado 350
Benson 5,200
East Sahuarita 1,500
Green Valley 21,200
Sahuarita 25,480
Sierra Vista 43,500
Sonoita 914
Tubac 1,200

A rough guess is over 100,000 people live in the area that will be affected. PLUS I-10 and HY 83 is an area of high growth south of Tucson since Tucson has few options for expansion between the AF base and the mountains.

Rosemont still needs 3 permits that I am aware of.

Pima Co. Air Quality
Army Corps of Engineers - Clean Water Act Section 404 permit
US Forest Service permit

The Forest Service plans to issue a decision by the end of 2012.

Their POO shows an estimated 30,000 gallons of diesel fuel would be used daily. We all know how that smells and causes pollution.

The Rosemont mine will permanently destroy a significant area of the Santa Rita Mountain Range. Rosemont’s Reclamation Plan makes it clear that post closure, it will not backfill the open pit thus leaving a permanent mile-wide hole, that will result in the creation of a pit lake that will contain toxic material.
