Our resources in the metals industry are producing just fine and there are several new copper mines being developed.
Canada also has several huge mines under development.

Arizona exports the 3 "Cs" copper, cattle and cotton!
Copper exports dropped in 2009

The real problem is our dependence on foreign oil and Iran is now rattling its sabers over the Straight of Hormuz, threatening to close it, and 1/3rd of of the oil shipped passes through there!

This is a good site to learn about the Rosemont.

The fact also remains that contrary to what Rosemont tells their investors, there is NO infrastructure at Rosemont, no electricity, no water (for a mining operation), no rail line for hauling ore and supplies as many other mines use, (AZ railroads were originally built to serve the mines). Instead Rosemont would use a narrow scenic highway for hauling all ore, receiving all supplies and for 400 employees. The road was never intended for this use and is totally inadequate FOR such use.

This is HY 83, that runs from Tucson south to the wine country. It is a 2 lane scenic road that would be totally congested by some 400 employees traveling to the mine plus all the trucks hauling the ore, supplies, construction equipment, etc. The road will be beat to hell by these heavy vehicles!

ROSEMONT LIES TO ITS INVESTORS!

Rosemont wants power to site by early 2013

Could 150-foot tall electric lines across the Santa Rita Experimental Range start going up next summer to serve the Rosemont Copper mine?
A Tucson Electric Power official said the mine has asked to have power at the mine site by March 2013, which would mean starting construction by August, at the latest.

However, that could only happen if the Forest Service approves the mine by August.

The entire project will cost $30 million, including $10 million for the power lines and another $10 million at each end for switchyards and other facilities. Rosemont will pay upfront if TEP builds the facilities.

Asarco who owns a mine west of I-19 has had several air pollution violations and paid heavy fines. They are in danger of being shut down if they continue!

Go to Google Earth and Green Valley and see the copper mines west of I-19! Some of those tailing piles are over 5 miles long!
