Townes died on 1-1-97 from complications of acute alcoholism. I didn't know who Townes was the day he died but it is also the day that I quit smoking.
Pancho and Lefty was written in the early 1970s. I'm not sure if Townes realized when he wrote the song how much of a struggle his own life would turn out to be. But, the first four lines may be his best epithet.
