Can you please comment on the concept of recovery from landfill other than specialized monofill sites, because the subject is important and interesting? I have serious (uninformed) doubts about the economic viability of mining the enormous quantities of plastic wrapping and containers which have been inextricably mixed with garbage, kitty litter and bulk trash and continue to be generated daily by the most committed of recycling households because no alternative exists. Surely most of what has been buried is lost for ever? The need is to provide new collection for separated food packaging etc - even humble salad now comes in clamboxes -in addition to clean shopping bags where that service exists so it is not lost as soon as it is sold. That will not happen until there is a market for the material. Hundreds of PtO machines nationwide hopefully may make that happen and that would be wonderful but the feedstock would not be 'free'. I cannot see that billions of tons of buried treasure is anything beyond a myth, but would like to be corrected if I'm wrong. jmignoranto. ex.
