In some cases, yes, bidding on the ASK will support a raise in PPS, in this case the MM's are trying to lower the PPS to fill their shares cheaply. So, by building a buffer in between the bid and the MM's, helps keep the PPS from dropping.

I've done both today, placed a buy lower than the bid as a buffer and bought shares at the ASK to help sustain the PPS.
