3M Announcement is Good News for MMTC, IMO

MIT 1000a is simple, easy to use, and quick and requires only clean water and the culture to be tested:
“The [MIT] technology is a non-biological identification process that is extremely easy to use. It does not rely on chemical processing, fluorescent tags or upon DNA analysis. (From Technical Overview White Paper http://www.micro-imaging.com/pdf/TechnicalOverview.pdf )

3M™ Molecular Detection System DOES rely on chemical processing, fluorescent tags AND upon DNA analysis.

Also, with the 3M system, no mention of AOAC, USDA or any other independent certifications. However, they do say: “Independent laboratory studies with the 3M Molecular Detection System are currently underway to pursue global method recognitions.”

MIT already has independent Listeria Certification, with other two major pathogen certifications well underway.

All in all, 3M’s announcement validates that there is a multi-billion dollar market for pathogen testing, and 3M will call further attention to the market need. There will be big players (like 3M) and small players (like MMTC). In 21st century technology, it’s often the small companies with a solid product that compete successfully. Look at what the startups like Apple, Lotus Development, and Microsoft did to IBM.
