SGR: Ref my post # 44141. I spent the last week researching how traditional and “rapid” methods of detection and confirmation for the presence of Salmonella, E Coli, Listeria, and others are accomplished in food processing facilities. I have concluded that that the ownership and responsibility for the process of creating and verifying the integrity of the cultures traditionally belongs to the facility and not to product or method used to make the final “fail” or “pass” decision on the presence of pathogens in the food. Therefore, please do not bother Mr. Brennan with my requests for items #1 and #2 in that post.
I was surprised to discover that there are so many competing companies and techniques in this business. All of the competing processes appear to have drawbacks such as longer time requirements to develop a verifiable confirmation, use of consumable materials which must be discarded after each test, and/or higher man-hours per result. I was also surprised to learn that many of the pathogens of food safety concern have multiple species. Salmonella has two, E Coli has 4, and Listeria has 6 (though only 1 is harmful to humans). This phenomenon may present an opportunity to MIT in expanding its library.
I was finally able to download the Users Guide for the MIT1000. The calibration check(s) and scope of data entry requirements found in the procedure have increased my confidence that the technical side of the house at MIT knows what it is doing.
My only question remaining for Mr. Brennan would be with regards to how liability insurance fits into his business plan. I spent part of my career in a company that produced a “life saving” product – and it did save a lot of lives. Inevitably though, bad things happened and when they did, that company got sued whether we were at fault or not, because when people get severely injured or killed, everybody sues everybody. I hope that he will be prepared to answer questions on the subject of insurance at the Demo.
