Food Innovations targets retail
Gourmet News, Nov 2004 by Wolfe, Anna

NAPLES, Fla.-Specialty food distributor Food Innovations Inc., based here, will start 2005 off by targeting upscale grocery stores with its origin-specific perishables, explained Joe DiMaggio, Jr., Food Innovations' founder, president and chief executive officer.

In July the specialty food distributor teamed up with U.S. Foodservice, a subsidiary of international food service giant Royal Ahold, for a national rollout of its origin-specific perishables to restaurants.

"We have never had a quality issue," added DiMaggio.

Upscale retailers have approached Food Innovations about the 5,000 products they represent, which include farm-raised poultry, foie gras, truffles, specialty lamb, 450 cheeses, seven origins of swordfish, and 50 types of sausages.

Crane Creek Markets, Boise, Idaho, and Brandt's Cheese Haus, Milwaukee, are a couple of Food Innovations retail clients.

"Chefs love to name the brand and region on the menu," he said. "Supermarkets are catching on." Food Innovations does not inventory the products, instead, they are shipped overnight.
