Lawyers/Judges have various undergraduate degrees and a considerable range of ability to understand complex facts outside their normal spheres.
Given the complexity of this patent and the science, obfuscation is a reasonable legal approach for the side that would lose on a rigorous scientific basis. This is especially true at the District Court level. But they need to preserve the enablement argument which may fair better on appeal.
