How about upgrade? In the real world equipment gets upgraded all the time. Many times upgrades are backward compatible, it may be that only firmware or software download may need to be replaced/upgraded not entire backbone.
What happened to the old analog systems equipment when Qualcom came along with a better mouse trap "CDMA", can you even buy an analog phone anymore? I seem to remember that in the early days of digital phones that there was a dual mode "digital/analog" phone on the market.
I'm not an expert but I don't think that would be a problem, carriers if needed would upgrade their infrastructure.
It may be a little o w i e certainly not an Ouch. Especially in this competitive market, only one carrier, say Verizon, offered ASNAP features, the rest would be forced to follow suit or lose customer base.
