MUST READ!! Bayer Quick Release Crystals removed from market

Atlanta News
October 15, 2010

There is an e-mail floating around advising people to put this quick release aspirin next to your bed at night and should you awaken with chest pains to dissolve them in your mouth for quick emergency treatment for a heart attack. While that sounds good it is not recommended as the e-mail says.

However, all the information below on Bayer Crystal Aspirin may now be “moot” according to information I learned later by speaking to a representative at Bayer this morning. Two pharmacies here in Atlanta were totally unaware of the removal of this product by Bayer.

They have discontinued this product from the market as of September 22, 2010. She said it was a “marketing” decision. Apparently, at this time there is no indication that FDA recalled them; but they have in the past warned Bayer about other products. However, the information below regarding aspirin and heart attacks is still advisable.

She also verified that it was NOT to be used in the case of the onset of a heart attack. I asked her if people still had this on their shelves should they discard the product and she said it was okay to use it for regular pain.

In 2008, Bayer was warned by the FDA on two other of their products Bayer Women’s Low Dose Aspirin + Calcium and Heart Advantage. You can read about this at

http://www.pharmalot.com/2008/10/fda-warns-bayer-about-aspirin-marketing/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Pharmalot+%28Pharmalot%29&utm_content=Twitter

However, according to their spokesman this morning, there will be no more crystal aspirin available at the store unless the store has failed to remove it from their shelves. Be warned that the Internet is flooded with sites recommending this product to prevent or help in time of a heart attack. There are specific reasons why this product and others like it should not be used at onset of heart attack. Many contain other products that would cause more harm than good.

Anytime you get an e-mail that involves any type of information regarding health matters, you should never take it for granted. Always do your homework. Check out e-mails on “Truth or Fiction,” or “Snopes.”

If it involves a product always check with the manufacturer of the product or FDA to make sure that what is being shared is correct. But your best line of defense is your physician or pharmacist for your own personal care; but this morning when I contacted two local pharmacists, they did not know the Bayer Crystal Aspirin had been discontinued and removed from the market.

The e-mail in part says: (Continue to read as there is great information here on recognizing heart attack symptoms and the heart associations recommendation regarding aspirin; and information about aspirin products in general – who should take them and who should not; and other aspects and warnings regarding these products.)

The e-mail said, “Why keep Bayer Crystal aspirin by your bedside?” (Information still valuable by with other aspirin products).

About Heart Attacks

There are other symptoms of a heart attack besides the pain in the left arm.

One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack. The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.

If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

Afterwards: CALL 911

- say "heart attack!"

- say that you have taken 2 aspirins.

- let someone in your household know or

- phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by

All good advice; however the e-mail goes on to tout the ease of using the new Bayer Crystal Aspirin for this for quick ingestion into the body. (Moot at this point unless you still have them available).

Please read the entire article on Snopes for its great advice and information about heart attacks; BUT DO NOT TAKE BAYER CRYSTALS - take regular plain aspirin. This can be chewed in an emergency as well or if available should be taken with a few sips of water.

While the premise of these quick acting crystals sounds great – they can be more harmful than helpful.

These crystal aspirins contains 850mg of aspiring plus, caffeine and other ingredients. As do other products.

One lady said she phoned the Bayer Hot Line and was told:

“Being sent around the internet is a claim, not by Bayer, that this crystal form would be very useful if you are having a heart attack. This is not true.

By phoning the Bayer help line for the facts, she was told:

“I called Bayer Health Care regarding the product Bayer Crystal Aspirin after a pharmacist advised NOT to take it for an onset of a heart attack. This product contains caffeine & 850 mg of aspirin. Because of these features Bayer recommends that you DO NOT use this product for the onset of a heart attack. The FDA recommends that as little as two 81 mg aspirin is sufficient or one regular 350 mg. aspirin.

The Bayer Crystals also contains phenylalanine 6 mg per powder pouch. You should take the time to read about phenylalanine which can be very dangerous for some people and it does not mix with many other medications. www.sweetpoison.com/phenylalanine.html

However as a pain reliever these new Bayer Quick Release Crystals are (were) good for what they are intended for – quick release for severe pain. But there are also many precautions to take with aspirin no matter what the reason for taking them.

See the Bayer web pages and learn of the good aspects and bad side effects of taking aspirin. Just don’t take the crystals at the first sign of a heart attack. (This is moot now unless you have them in your medicine cabinet or they are still on your pharmacist or grocers’ shelves.)

Many lives could be saved if heart attack patients take the 350 mg. at the first sign of a heart attack which can be more than just chest pain. Many times heart attacks do not come on suddenly but slowly and can be mistaken for indigestion or a pulled muscle or something else. If you are able to take aspirin with no ulcers or such; it would be a good idea to take the aspirin just in case.

Information about Bayer Quick Release Crystals that no longer applies – while the idea was a good one for some reason the company withdrew them from the market.

Bayer Quick Release Crystals combines the trusted strength of Bayer Aspirin with an added pain relieving booster to provide fast relief when you need it most. This product contains active crystals with a bold citrus taste. Unlike caplets and tablets which take time to dissolve, Bayer Quick Release Crystals dissolve quickly on your tongue, so they are instantly ready to go to work.

Bayer Quick Release Crystals come in individually sealed pouches so no matter where or when pain hits, you can be ready to expect relief fast. DO NOT TAKE IN CASE OF HEART ATTACK.

The Bayer site gives reasons for taking this product and reasons not to take it. This information is important information no matter what type of aspirin you may be taking – so I leave it in.

To be forewarned is the best way to be prepared in any situation. Never give children and teenagers aspirin for the outside chance it will cause Reye’s syndrome. Please continue to read at Bayer site for allergies, alcohol use, stomach problems, bleeding problems, ulcers or if you are taking a blood thinner, have gout, diabetes, arthritis. There are many more warnings about the use of any aspirin product. Some other pain relievers may contain aspirin. Read the labels.

The "Solution" to the PROBLEM

The scientists at PharmStar have been developing for a period of over 20 years to effectively, rapidly,
and completely convert common aspirin, the
“GOLD STANDARD” of pain relievers, into a much
more effective and safer form. What has been achieved is the most significant breakthrough in the pain
reliever field in many decades. The potassium based derivative of aspirin, “AQUAPRIN ” is the safest,
most effective, and fastest acting form of aspirin, and as a matter of fact, faster acting and safer, and
therapeutically more effective than any other over the counter pain reliever worldwide. Most likely it will
be the best OTC pain reliever worldwide.
PharmStar expects to be a leader in the pain management field, and to capture a substantial segment
of the analgesic, cardio protective, anti-thrombotic and antipyretic pharmacotherapeutic market because
AQUAPRIN and other line extension products offer significant competitive advantages. AQUAPRIN is
an instantly dissolving, fast-acting, non-acidic, safe, potent, drinkable derivative of aspirin, which
virtually eliminates irritation to the GI-tract. It is also a more effective and efficient method of delivering
salicylates into the blood stream, achieving almost peak blood plasma levels in 5 to 7 minutes.
Moreover, it contains therapeutically active levels of potassium which acts as an antacid, neutralizing
stomach acid. Potassium also lowers blood pressure and helps to dilate blood vessels allowing for
better blood circulation.
Since the aspirin-derivative salicylates in AQUAPRIN are fully dissolved into an antacid solution, they
are immediately absorbed into the blood stream. AQUAPRIN ‘s antacid characteristics help neutralize
stomach acids, thus virtually eliminating local topical and systemic gastric irritation and damage.
In addition, salicylates in conventional aspirin tablets are degraded during their passage through the GItract
and during metabolism. This causes them to achieve only 30 to 40% absorption efficiency.
AQUAPRIN ‘s unique formula allows it to achieve 100% absorption efficiency.
