SAO PAULO, Brazil--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2003-- New Network Will Position Operator to Deliver New IP, MPLS Services to Corporate Market

Telefonica Empresas is starting to offer multimedia services for corporate customers throughout Brazil, beyond Sao Paulo, with a nationwide multiservice and IP/MPLS network deployed by Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSX:NT), featuring Nortel Networks Passport Multiservice Switches and Juniper Networks JNPR M20 routing platforms.

With this nationwide multiservice network, Telefonica Empresas is able to provide a range of voice, data, IP (Internet Protocol) and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) services, including IP VPN (Virtual Private Network), Internet access and remote access to corporate intranets.

"The network was built using `state-of-the-art' technology, building a reliable network for delivery of high-quality, highly-available services," said Herve Adam, managing director, Nortel Networks Brazil.

"Telefonica is one of the largest telecommunications providers in the world and is highly acknowledged for its service quality and innovation," said Tim Lambie, vice president, Latin America Sales, Juniper Networks.

Nortel Networks Passport 7000 series of multiservice switches offers a versatile, reliable and scaleable networking platform for the service provider edge, delivering high performance, cost savings, investment protection and management simplicity.

The Telefonica Empresas network also includes Juniper Networks M-series routing platforms, which provide the port density, flexibility, performance and control required for deployment in a variety of environments. With consistent JUNOS software, performance and technology, the M-series platforms drive lower capital costs by simplifying support; by accelerating design, test and deployment; and by reducing the time it takes to provision new IP services.
