LaRonge, however, is not the deepest mine in the world but in the Western Hemisphere. The deepest mines in the world are located in South Africa near Johannesburg. Until seeing your post I had not read much about deep mining and the conditions miners endure. Air hot enough it must be air conditioned so that men can tolerate working these depths and rocks so hot that at times they literally explode! A one hour elevator ride down to work...Tau Tona is 3.9 kilometers(2.4 miles) deep. I am no claustrophobic, but this I could not do. A different breed of cat for sure.
