TA-65 is the first natural supplement that has been shown to activate the telemerase enzyme in the human body, Astragalus contains a small amount of a molecule that has been named TA-65 wjch is only found in certain species. Geron discovered TA-65 in 2001. Geron has licensed the distribution to TA-Sciences. In September 2010 Sierra Sciences published a redearch paper showing the TA-65 supplement to activate the enzyme telomerase. Our somatic cells contain the gene that expresses telomerase. However, that gene is repressed. This is where the study of telomerase activators come into the ageing equation. There is a region of DNA near the telomerase gene that serves as a binding region for the protein. If the protein binds to this region, it represses the gene that turns on telomerase and telomerase will not be produced by the cell. Siwrra Sciences and Geron are searching for molecules that will bind to this telomerase gene and prevent the repressor protein from binding to the telomerase gene.
